Berumen bats, blocks and pitches to Shasta

WELLS — The growth of Wells Class of 2025 graduate Cesar Berumen has been evident during his high school career; both as a baseball player and a person. The Covid-19 pandemic — which occurred during his junior high school days — limited his opportunities to improve his skills as he prepared for playing at the high school level. But his uncle, Wells head baseball and basketball coach Joel Soriano, used the time to start a travel ball team with Elko’s Joey Schweer.“I got Cesar and Luis on the Snipers, and we played travel ball with the Elko kids,” Soriano said. “During that time, it showed them that they needed to improve and work harder to get where they wanted to be and what we needed from them. Coming from Wells, you can be a star player, but they needed to get better to compete with the kids from bigger schools.” Berumen’s work ethic, his mindset and his skills grew by leaps and bounds over the past four to five years — ultimately paying off with a college commitment. He has signed to play baseball for Shasta College — in Redding, California — a member of the California Community College Athletic Association. For the 2025 season, the Knights finished with a 16-24 overall record and went 11-14 in the Golden Valley Conference. Shasta sent a recruiter to Smith Valley, watched Berumen play on May 2 and approached him about playing for the Knights. "They liked how hot my bat was, how I blocked the ball and they way I commanded my pitches,” Berumen said.vAt Shasta, Berumen has the choice to pitch — and not bat — or try out for a field position and hit the ball. “I would like to be a two-way player, but I’m there to show them what I can do,” Berumen said. “I’ll play anywhere they need me.” Shasta and Soriano are not the only ones who have recognized Berumen’s talents, skills and qualities — he also sees them in himself. “I have changed a lot. My mental state is more about being a good leader to the younger kids, show them they have to fight for a spot and let them know that they’re fine where they are struggling — we’ll back them up." “When I was in junior high, I couldn’t block a ball and now I can block everything. Hitting, I can recognize pitches and adjust to an umpire’s strike zone. On the mound, I have more command and can locate my pitches better.” Soriano has noticed Berumen’s growth in his skillset as well as ability to lead and compete. “I didn’t want to start him when he was a freshman, but some of my coaches said we needed him to play. He had a lot of pressure to perform,” Soriano said. “Mentally, he became a leader for us, was the MVP the last two years and wanted the ball in crunch time. He calmed everyone down; they trusted and supported each other. He’s a competitor, battles for everything, is there for everyone and has put in a lot of time.” For the short-term, Berumen is not content with simply being on Shasta’s team. “Hopefully, I can get a starting position as a freshman,” he said. Long-term, he has his sights set high.“After Shasta, I want to transfer to a D-I university or a bigger school,” he said. “Someday, I would like to get drafted to the MLB.” As for academics, Berumen plans to work on his general studies and eventually become an electrician.“I just want to thank my aunt and uncle for taking me to travel ball tournaments, getting me all the extra reps and always being there for me whenever I need,” Berumen said.

Our senior class of 2025 decided to have a little fun before saying goodbye to high school for the last time! They pulled some lighthearted pranks on both staff and students. They put bales of hay at each entrance, decorated the hallways with colorful sticky notes and toilet paper, and even made a sneaky visit to Principal Woolsey’s house to cover his tractor in sticky notes! It was all in good spirit and brought lots of smiles! Congratulations to the class of 2025 on completing your years at Wells Combined School, and good luck in your future endeavors!

Last week, students, coaches, and parents came together on the football field to construct a new shot put area and a long jump/triple jump pit. With enthusiasm and teamwork, they transformed these spaces, creating exciting opportunities for our athletes to train on-site, rather than having to travel to Elko for field event practice. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this effort!

NIAA Eligibility Information for Students and Parents
This document translates many of the NIAA’s major rules, regulations, and policies to help parents and students better understand the expectations for athletic participation. It is linked directly to the NIAA Student-Athlete Registration Instructions:

Wells Family Resource Center Summer Camps

Students must be registered online prior to trying out for any sport sanctioned by the NIAA.
1. Create an account at www.aktivate.com. NOTE: Please create only one account. One account will be used throughout high school, regardless if students transfer schools.
2. Click on START/COMPLETE REGISTRATIONS, then NEW REGISTRATION. Click on SELECT SCHOOL, then Nevada, and Wells High School. Click SELECT ATHLETE and then “Add New Athlete” or select a student from the list. Please use the same full legal name the student is registered with at school. Ensure all student(s) and parent(s)/guardian(s) addresses match the school registration system.
3. SELECT YEAR/ SPORT
NOTE: It's best to register for all sports the athlete is interested in. You can add sports later in the school year, but you must complete the majority of this process again. If the student-athlete thinks they may be interested in a sport, check that box now.
4. Fill out the GUARDIAN INFO, whoever is listed as Guardian 1 must also be the primary parent/guardian listed in the school’s registration system and must reside at the same address as the athlete.
5. Fill out the HEALTH INSURANCE INFO.
6. NEVADA QUESTIONNAIRE: Click on the NIAA TRYOUT CHECKLIST and answer the questions by checking the boxes, typing your name, and clicking E-SIGN.
HIGH SCHOOL CHECK, answer the questions based on your situation. Check YES or NO to each question asked and follow the prompts. Answersto these questions may have you complete a transfer application. The transfer process may tell you the student is ineligible until proof of eligibility is provided, this is normal, and documentation can be submitted later in the process.
If your athlete is a freshman, you must complete a NON TRANSFER RESIDENCE VERIFICATION. You will need to provide two current proofs of address and a transcript. If you have moved, a document of abandonment must be provided to show evidence that the prior residence has been vacated.
DIVORCED/SEPARATED HOUSEHOLDS: Any student from a divorced or separated household is required to provide a copy of the complete custody agreement, including the judge’s signature page, to prove that the parent the student is residing with has physical custody of the child. All pages of the custody agreement must be included. If the parents have equal physical custody or there are no court documents, the student establishes athletic eligibility with the parent they began ninth grade. Once eligibility is established, the student may not change parent/guardian without being subject to the transfer rules.
AFFIDAVIT OF RESIDENCY: There is a question about students living in the attendance zone on an affidavit of residency. This is a unique situation and does not apply to most students. If the family is living in the home of another adult, a hardship application must be completed.
7. Click on ELECTRONIC DOCUMENTS. Parents & athletes must read and e-sign all documents acknowledging their understanding and agreement to abide by the documents. FINAL E-SIGNATURE must be completed by the parent and athlete after reading the electronic documents.
8. Click on PHYSICAL DOCUMENTS. NIAA PHYSICAL FORM must be printed out by clicking the DOWNLOAD button. The HISTORY FORM is completed by the parent and athlete prior to the physical exam and the PHYSICAL EXAMINATION FORM is completed by the physician. These two forms are not submitted to the school. The physician completes the MEDICAL ELIGIBILITY FORM (page 7), which must be uploaded back into your Aktivate account by clicking the UPLOAD COMPLETE FORM button. Free scanning apps are available on smartphones if you do not have a scanner. You can also upload clear and unobstructed pictures of this form if necessary.
ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY: All student-athletes must be enrolled in a minimum of two semester credits (four classes) during the season(s) they wish to participate. Students must have an unweighted grade point average of 2.0 or better in the grading period prior to trying out for a sport, have passed at least four classes, and failed no more than one class. GPA/credit requirements will again be checked during the season if a grading period ends during that time. All students in ninth grade are eligible until the first grading period grades are posted (middle school grades do not factor into high school eligibility). Once an athlete makes a team, grade checks occur every three weeks during the season. Students must maintain passing grades to remain eligible. Students who don't meet minimum initial eligibility requirements may gain eligibility at an upcoming three-week check with all passing grades.
