CARLIN — On Tuesday, the Wells and Carlin softball teams met up for a doubleheader in league play.
The Lady Leopards improved to 8-0 in the 1A North with a pair of run-rule victories by final scores of 23-10 and 22-3.
Game One
Wells plated three runs in the top of the first, but Carlin answered with a two-run effort in the home half.
The Lady Leopards jumped to an 11-2 lead with a run in the second, three in the third and four more in the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, Carlin closed the gap to a single run with an eight-run explosion.
But Wells closed the contest on a 12-0 streak — crossing six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings — and pulled away for a 23-10 victory.
For the Lady Leopards, junior Adriana Aguilar was a force at the plate and hit 5-for-6 with a double, scored four runs and drove in three.
A quartet of Wells batters all finished 3-for-5.
Freshman Stacia Hansen (four runs and two RBI) and junior Grace Otto (four RBI) each hit a double, sophomore Khloe Delrio scored three runs and drove in two and freshman Mayte Casas tallied two RBI and a run.
Sophomore Aryanna Rodriguez (three RBI and three runs) and junior Andreina Mercado (three runs and two RBI) both batted 2-for-4.
Freshman Jess Wright closed 1-for-6, crossed twice and drove in one.
Without hits, freshman Avery Safford scored two runs and freshman Jitzel Rivas came around once.
In the start, sophomore Aryanna Rodriguez allowed nine runs — two earned — on five hits with six walks and four strikeouts over 4-1/3 innings.
In relief, Otto gave up only two hits across 1-2/3.
For Carlin, senior Caileigh Shilts hit 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI.
Junior Kayona Christensen batted 2-for-3 with a triple, drove in two runs and scored two of her own.
Sophomore Mariah Ramirez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
Senior Theralyn Flores (RBI and a run) and junior Elizabeth Clancy (RBI and a run) both finished 1-for-2.
Sophomore Abigail Caple was 1-for-3 with a double, an RBI and a run.
Sophomore Katelyn Pooley closed at 1-for-4.
Without knocks, senior Adian Adams scored two runs and sophomore Amelya Doxey crossed once.
In the loss, junior Joey Drown gave up 23 runs — 10 earned — on 20 hits with two walks over six frames.
Game Two
In the second half of the twin bill, Wells slammed the door early.
The Lady Leopards scored nine runs in the top of the first — Carlin crossing three in the home half — and tacked on 13 more in the second and two in the third en route to a 24-3 victory after the third inning.
Mercado batted 3-for-3 and scored four runs, and Rivas went 2-for-2 with a double, four RBI and three runs.
A trio of Wells batters — Otto (two doubles, three RBI and three runs), Aguilar (double, four RBI and two runs) and Wright (three RBI and three runs) — finished 2-for-3.
Hansen hit 2-for-4, drove in three runs and scored three.
Safford (three runs and an RBI) and senior Evelyn Walz (two runs) both batted 1-for-3.
Without a hit, DelRio crossed once.
In the win, DelRio allowed three runs — just one earned — on one hit with three Ks and a free pass over three frames.
According to Carlin’s stats, the Lady Railroaders mounted five hits.
Doxey finished 2-for-2, and Shilts and Ramirez both went 1-for-1 with a run scored.
Flores closed 1-for-2 with an RBI.
Without hits, Pooley and Clancy each drove in a run — Caple crossing once.
In the loss, Caple allowed seven runs on one hit with four walks and never recorded an out.
From the pen, Doxey gave up eight runs — seven earned — on six hits with three passes over one inning.
Drown came in and allowed nine runs — five earned — on 10 hits through two frames.
